This virtue was called pietas and it was a sacred responsibility to serve family, religion, and gods (Juneau 641). For family, the father of the household, or the paterfamilia, has the responsibility of protecting his family and anyone who works for him. Likewise the rest of the family and the workers are obedient to the father, or risk being outcast from society. In religion, the Romans had to perform rituals of offering for animate and inanimate spirits, such as the spirit of the house, for protection. During war times, the Romans would see themselves as the favorites of the gods. In return they expanded the war gods and built shrines and temples to worship them. Gods such as Jupiter Victor and Victoria were created with the establishment of temples (Weinstock 211). This duty is similar to the Greek values as it’s about man trying to become the best he can be. The only difference is that Roman values is more a long term working goal when Greek values focused more on seeking cleverness and intelligence, honor and glory, and hospitality without shame (Walcom 170). These philosophy ideas would influence others such as artists to put their own values of people into their own
