My husband loves me, I know that, yet one time he placed me in his ergastulum , prison at home, for a week because I was “disobedient”: I contradicted him in front of his friends and he felt humiliated, thus he punished me. Presently, we are in the middle of the third Punic War and my daughter is extremely stressed since her youngest son is presently fighting against the Phoenician colony of Carthage; however, my husband states that the war will end soon. I hope he is right. I hope that he will survive and receive some parts of the conquered lands. The end of the Punic war resulted in major social consequences such as the increase of slaves and the gain of power by certain women. My husband was right. In fact, as the members of the Senate my husband with the others members could command and even order to kill someone. He does not only advise the consuls but also sent and received ambassadors on behalf of the city, appoint officials to govern provinces, declared war and negotiated peace, and appropriated funds for various projects such as public building construction. All those responsibilities contribute to significant power, as my husband in some ways is a prestigious leader that rules the city and acquires a lot of money, which gives him authority and power. Yet, sometimes senators did not agree on different subjects, such as the appointment of military, commanders and had to spend a lot of time debating on the issue. My husband says that is difficult to argue with all of them as everyone thinks that he is better than the other is. However, since my husband, during debates, always delivers good speeches and arguments the majority of the Senate supports him, his propositions are adopted, and his power increases. For instance, in 196 BCE in Etruria slaves revolted and the consul did not know what to do with them thus he asked for the Senate’s advice.
