Self-esteem is a hot topic in psychology and has generated lots of research. It is considered a strong predictor of well-being and quality of life. High self-esteem is often advised because studies comply many positive qualities as a result of having high self-esteem. While low self-esteem is rather closely related to mental illness.
The physical self is a crucial element in the development of self-esteem. A culture that places value on certain physical features and characteristics, self-esteem is attached to physical appearance and encourages people to live up to these standard to acquire the self-esteem they desire. This study found an overall positive relationship between exercise and mental well-being. However, looking more specifically, young women between the ages of 16 and 21 showed a significant negative relationship formed between exercise and well-being. As the exercise performed increase, self-esteem and body satisfaction decreased. Also analyzing the different reasons people choose to exercise, study found that more women than men engage in exercise as a means to control their weight and be tone as well. Exercising for the sake of weight control mediates the negative relationship between exercise and well-being. The participants will be randomly assigned into two different groups. All participants will proceed to fill out a demographics and and health status questionnaires. The health status questionnaire will include questions on weight, height, amount of exercise sessions and so forth. Then group one will proceed to read a persuasive argument on the benefits of physical activity and at the end of the paper, they will sign a pledge to make attempt to increase their physical activity. After taking the pledge, each subject will receive pamphlet on types of physical activity routine and recommendation such as try taking a walk for 30 minutes.
However, after the questionnaire, the second group will instead read a persuasive argument on the benefits of doing the things you enjoy like dancing, and playing soccer. Similarly, at the end of the paper, they will be prompt to sign a pledge to do more of the activities they enjoy.
