In order for memory to be effective one must be able to retain and retrieve information. Lecture 3a: Memory: Basic Concepts and early research (Slides 2, 6, 9, & 10) provides relevant information regarding memory that relates to this study. On slide 2, it states that there are three stages in the life of a memory that is needed in order to use the memory. First one needs to encode the information, second store the information, and last retrieve the information from memory. Slide 6 describes the “Multi-store Model of Memory.” One of the most common models of memory is “The Modal Model.” This model represent memory in three structural features: Sensory storage (hold a lot information for seconds), Short-term memory, which also known as working memory (hold information for 5-7 seconds), and Long-term memory (holds information for years/decades). In slide 9 it exposes one way memory loses retrieval velocity. This stems from the idea of the Time-Dependency Principle, “Memory for an event is an inverse (negative) function of the length of the retention interval between storage and retrieval.” (Slide 9) So, what causes one to forget over time? Slide 10 examines if forgetting over time is causes by decay, interference, or both by reflecting on an experiment conducted by Waugh and Norman. In summary, they found that interference is the cause of the decrease of memory over time and may not have anything to do with decay. The idea is …show more content…
In a lab setting, participants would be tested on their cognitive performance before and after adequate preparation and sleep on their performance on the serial position effect experiment. At the initial meeting with participants would be requested to provide their informed consent. Following, they would be assigned an identification number, and then provided an Information/instruction Briefing Sheet. These written instructions/briefings would explain experimental conditions, clarify guidelines of adequate amount of sleep and sleep deprivation, and the specified time and location of the
