What really brings the different personas to life and makes them relatable to the reader in one way or another are their actions and dialogue, and in my case, Honore’s mannerisms remind me of my father. “Ay mamasota!” both Honore and my father say when looking at their beautiful wives. Reading how he looks at his wife and thinks about her was utterly disgusting for me because all I had in my mind was my dad doing the same, and that’s never a pretty picture. Also, my father is more or less just as hot headed as Honore, however he isn’t nearly half as vulgar as he is. On the other hand, Maruca reminds me of my mother in the sense that the both of them know which of their husbands’ buttons to press. My mom, as kind and fun she can be, really knows how to piss off my dad. Just like Maruca, she’ll go off and spend money on something unnecessary without at least telling my dad first, and of course, he blows his top. But after they’ve both had time to cool down, they always revert to their usual ways. Moreover, in order for my dad to have something he wants, much like how Honore wanted to keep the dolls in the house, my mother needs something in return. Although I have felt slightly uncomfortable reading this novel, at times, it hasn’t given me reason to hate or dislike it. Sure it grossed me out a teeny bit, but hey, where is the lie? My dad is the same way about my mother as Honore is to Maruca’s maracas, to an extent at
