They hold this opinion because relatively few Americans die from guns; firearms hold responsibility for 1.3% of deaths in the United States (Should More Gun Laws Be Enacted?). However, this opinion does not take into consideration that Americans have become desensitized to the number of gun-related deaths. According to the Annals of American Medicine, an estimated number of 31,000 deaths occur every year in the United States alone. Nevertheless, Americans are so desensitized to these deaths- considering 31,000 deaths to be a small number- that instead of trying to address the issue, they focus on protecting the guns instead of the future victims. In Japan, 22 gun-related homicides were considered a national tragedy and the nation actively spoke of the issue for a very long time (The Young Turks). Empathy for fallen victims shows reverence for the deceased and taking actions to reduce further deaths shows even further consideration for the victims.
