Being that my younger brother , that I so dearly love has sickle cell disease. “Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin-Beta gene found on chromosome 11. Hemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. Red blood cells with normal hemoglobin are smooth and round and glide through blood vessels. In people with sickle cell disease , abnormal hemoglobin molecules stick to one another and form long rod-like structures. These structures cause red blood cells become stiff , in return ,assuming a sickle shape. Their shape causes these red blood cells to pile up, causing blockages and damaging vital organs and tissue.” …show more content…
I realize how blessed I am to not have any major complications as such. He also inspired me to participate in community service programs and functions at different locations throughout Dallas to help support kids with not only sickle cell but other problems as well. Some of the kids I met really impacted the way I see things nowadays. I’m now more aware and more conscious about genetic disorders and hope to one day help put more smiles on even more kids faces. GOD makes no mistakes, so I know he has a plan for my brother and I. Everything happens for a reason and my brother is a exception student and athlete and I know he will leave a legacy, sickle cell won’t stop
