He was also the eldest of twelve siblings, whom were also well recognized in Mexico. At the age of eight, Gutierrez gave his son a violin as a gift. From this moment on Silvestre began to practice his first instrument. Research has shown that studying music or playing an instrument at an early age is essential in a child’s life. “The earlier a child…comes to grips with music, the more the brain growth will be influenced. It sets them up for life”(Letts). Silvestres parents were of great support and encouragement, and acknowledged their children’s talents. Fermin was a painter and pioneer of the Mexican muralism. There was also Jose, who was a writer and author of numerous novels such as: El Lute Humane, El Apando and El Cuadrante de la Soledad. Then of course Silvestre, the musician (Soto). Perceiving his son’s potential in music, Gutierrez decides to send Silvestre to study at the National Conservatory in Mexico City. Providing him with the opportunity to achieve a musical education. During this time Revueltas learned to play the violin with Jos Rocabruna and composition with Rafael J. Tello. In 1917, Silvestre Revueltas moved to San Antonio, Texas where he resumed his studies at St. Edwards College. At this time Silvestre discovers the music of Claude Debussy, and finds a similarity in the style of music he wants to play. Debussy was a famous French composer, and pianist. In 1919 Silvestre moved to Chicago, and enrolled in the Chicago Musical College, where he graduated with a degree in violin, harmony and composition.
