Iowa State’s name has changes throughout the years, originally being call Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (Iowa State University History, 2006). With the first class of 26 students graduating in 1872, Iowa State was known for agriculture, engineering, extension, and home economics (Iowa State University History, 2006). In 1879 Iowa State opened the nation’s first state veterinary school of medicine (Iowa State University History, 2006). This school now has over 100 buildings and is proud of its rich history. This classification system is used to measure colleges across the United States. It uses information from the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) to “allow institutions and researchers to make informed decisions regarding the selection of peer institutions based on analytical groupings and institutions using consistent standards” (Schloss and Cragg, 2013). This measurement in widely used by institutions to compare themselves to one another. A large majority of the colleges in the United States are ranked in this classification. In 2010 over 4,000 institutions were measured by the Carnegie Classification (Schloss and Cragg, 2013). The Basic Carnegie Classification model puts colleges into categories based upon the level of degrees they award to schools: Doctorate-granting university, Master’s college and university, Baccalaureate college, Associate’s college, Special Focus institutions, and Tribal colleges. Then within each of those categories there are further rankings, generally based upon the amount of research that is done by the school. As previously stated, Drake University is put into the Carnegie category of Master’s college and university: Larger Programs (Carnegie, 2016). The Carnegie Classification (2016) also classifies Drake by serving a majority of undergraduate students, as a private not-for-profit school, with balanced arts and sciences
