Differences –
There are many similarities and differences between Ten Canoes and The Fast Runner. Both are in reference to indigenous people, however, both films also explore stories which provide the audience with a deeper understanding of each tribes’ customs and laws. There are moments in each film which are similar such as having more than one wife or knowing ones place within the community. On the other hand both also have many differences as well for example, .
Some of the similarities between both films are how each group of indigenous people strong ties to their traditions and laws within the community to keep order. Each film demonstrates this as there are lessons learned by each tradition or law which is broken. …show more content…
Even though Atuat is promised to Oki, Atanarjuat challenges Oki and takes her as his wife. In Ten Canoes, there is no challenge as it is accepted by the women they will be the wife the man they are assigned too. Furthermore, by eliminating this challenge from their culture the Abornigal tribe maintains peace as no one harbors feelings of loss from losing. On the other hand in Ten Canoes Minygululu tells Dayindi a story of how the desire for another’s wife will lead to severe consensus for everyone who is ruled by envy. Another comparison is the manipulation a scorned woman presented in The Fast Runner. Atanarjuat finds himself married with two wives Atuat and Puja. Unlike Ten Canoes the wives know their roles and always seem to share the work among themselves and they also are faithful to their husband. Puja does not help with the chores or stays faithful to her husband as she is only interested in her own wants and not the needs of the family. She is very selfish, manipulative, and vengeful as she gets convinces her family to kill Atanarjuat as she claims he was going to kill her. In addition, unlike Ten Canoes where it appears a kidnapping has taken place. The Fast Runner begins with a curse a generation before and is stopped by after the children are grown and a ritual is performed to banish the curse. Ten Canoes the bad spirit has been brought on by a stranger and does not move from one generation to another. Furthermore, a spell is casted onto a rabbit and Oki consumes the spell. By doing this he loses his desire to kill Atanarjat and welcomes him back into the community. In addition, his sister’s manipulation does not work on him while he is under this spell. Atanarjat does not harm Oki with his return he declares the killing will stop and Oki is relieved of being the leader of the tribe. In Ten Canoes there are no killings within the tribe or
