The Roman Republic and the Common Good

Introduction
Ancient Rome is known to be a powerful and well put together civilization that was somewhat meeting the common good. The reason that Ancient Rome was a successful city was because they had a republic. A republic is a democracy where the people of Rome get to choose their leaders. The city had a huge population with a strong government. They had the five meanings of government, which were providing public services, protect rights, promote rule of law, prepare for a common defense, and support the economic system. Rome did best in most of these categories, but they failed in other ones too.

If they had to be graded for this section of the government, they would definitely earn an A+. One of the main reasons why Rome became so powerful was because of the strength of its army. Their army was advanced for their time. They had the best soldiers, the best weapons, and the best armour. Only men were allowed in the army, no women. There were two different types of soldiers: legionaries and auxiliaries. The legionaries were the very excellent soldiers. To become one you had to be over 17 years of age and a Roman citizen. Anyone that showed to be too weak or too short were rejected. All legionaries signed to serve for at least 25 years. If they survived during that time, at the end of their service they were granted with the gift of land that they could farm. On the other hand, an auxiliary soldier was a soldier that wasn’t a Roman citizen. This type of soldier was only paid a third of what the legionaries were paid. Auxiliaries often fought in the front lines were it was more dangerous. They also guarded forts and frontiers. All Roman soldiers were trained well. What was life like in the Roman Army? states, “When the Romans invaded Britain, their army was so good that it took on armies 10 times its size and won!” One of them could march 20 miles a day wearing heavy equipment and armour.
