Manifest Destiny had a focus on expanding within the continent and also on maintaining white supremacy (the idea that it was a white man’s burden and country to expand in and that they could do anything they want.) The Dawes Severalty Act shows a significant difference between the treatment of the “Indian Problem” compared to the African Americans. The act was another attempt to assimilate Indians by forcing them onto landholdings, and partitioning reservations into homesteads in hope of making Indians gain some semblance of a white farmer. This act would end up being a disaster,but it shows how the government wanted Indians to adopt white culture and religion and forget their native culture while on the other hand the government was content in leaving African American culture and religion
