In the beginning of the story, the author uses symbolism when he refers to the sun as a multiple of things, such as a flower and a coin large enough to buy the world. In both of these examples, he refers to the sun as a representation of hope and happiness. Another example of symbolism is, his description of how the children had a saddened look on their faces after the sun was gone. The author described their faces as showing pure depression.
