Design Research Questions Addressed Advantages Disadvantages Demonstration of Experimental Control
ABAB
Does this intervention work? Will the independent variable alter the dependent variable? Threats to internal validity can be controlled by the researcher with return to baseline.
A single participant can demonstrate experimental control within this design. Behaviors should of participant repertoire. Hard to unlearn intervention.
Withdrawal may be unethical for serve dangerous behaviors. Prediction-predicting intervention first data point based on initial baseline data.
Verification-return to initial baseline levels when intervention is withdrawn.
Replication-return …show more content…
Is this intervention effective? Easy to understand and implement with no need for withdrawal, concurrent measuring across settings, subjects, allow for direct monitoring of generalization. Can establish experimental control across a variety of conditions and good for skill acquisition. More time, resources, and assessments. No within series replication only across and identifying independent baselines can be challenging with concurrent measurements. Extended baselines or interventions may threaten experimental control, delayed intervention may pose a risk to client or others as an ethical concern. Prediction-when stable responding is noted in baseline for behavior 1 similar levels of responding can be predicted each subject.
Verification-little/no change from the first intervention to other baselines.
Replication-when level or responding for the behavior 1 intervention is stable or has met criterion then similar responding occurs within behavior 2 intervention, the intervention has replicated effectiveness across other intervention conditions.
