Today’s teenagers are living their lives in front of an online audience. Many adolescents are infatuated with getting likes and comments on post and photos. This gives them an influential sense of triumph and community recognition. Also, the persistent evaluation of another person’s physical image creates a sense of body dissatisfaction. Moreover, it starts to generate unhealthy and negative thoughts about the body. Low self-esteem is a major influence in the development of eating disorders like, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Social media can cause its users to become unhappy with themselves because they are comparing their lives with other people’s lives. Our increasingly connected world has created another platform for bullies to harass their victims. No longer are bullies confined to picking on other kids on the school playground; today, many bullies are refraining from physical assaults, choosing instead for verbal abuse via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Although parents, teachers and other authority figures can no longer count on physical signs like scars, torn clothing and bruises to tell the story, this certainly doesn’t mean that the effects of cyber bullying are any less damaging. Now that majority of teenagers are on social media, it is easier for teens to target others without consequences. Hiding behind a computer screen or a smartphone gives bullies a sense of power that they have never felt before. It is easier for a bully to say something hurtful behind a computer screen or a smartphone because they cannot feel the effects of what they are really saying. Furthermore, it can be difficult to depict the intention and tone in typed words. This means that something could easily be misinterpreted. With cyberbullying, it will always happen because teens are constantly connected. This constant connection leads to constant bullying.
