The four social worker roles I will use to address my targeted population are; Advocate, initiator, enabler, and mediator.
In social work, the role of an advocate is one of the most significant roles a social worker can undertake. According to the text, “an advocate is one who speaks out on the behalf of individuals, groups, or communities. The advocate role often entails stepping forward and speaking on behalf of the client system” (text). Advocacy typically comprises of using more effort or going out of one’s way to get the job done.
The role of the initiator is to bring attention to an existing or potential problem. “The issue may be a problem existing in the community, a need, or simply a situation that can be improved. Usually, this role must be followed up by other kinds of work, because pointing out existing problems doesn’t guarantee that they will be solved” (text). The role of enabler in social work is very different from the definition of an enabler when speaking in terms of chemical dependency.
