The NASW explains the ethical value of social justice, in where a social worker takes the initiative to promote change to the injustice a certain oppressed population…
Because of this, social justice is achieved through the servitude of people deemed as vulnerable, and oppressed, along with living in poverty (Jacobson, 2001). We also understand its pivotal role in the service it delivers to those in need by a way of the social policy arena devising and advocating to address the wide range of social problems in order to bring about change (Jacobson, 2001). Ironically, social policy efforts that are recent is aimed at the establishment or the protection of social workers roles, verses promoting transformations in the delivery of human services (Jacobson, 2001). It is also suggest more often in today’s society, social work students are more readily trained as clinical practitioners than advocates of change (Jacobson, 2001). Although there is a continuation of promoting social justice and action, strategies of this type is no longer prioritized (Jacobson, 2001).…
The National Association of Social Workers (n. d.) represents individuals who may be oppressed, underserved due to socio-economic status, or discriminated (National Association of Social Workers, n. d.). Social workers assist as representatives and advocates to a diverse group that is not only underserved, but also seek social justice via the exploration of various services (The National Association of Social Workers, n. d.). Social workers educate and protect the rights of the underserved community and somehow try to create unison within a community (The National Association of Social Workers, n. d.). On the other hand, the National Organization for Human Services (2013), respects the dignity and welfare of all people by honoring cultural…
Discrimination and oppression of vulnerable populations leave members unable to use the resources around them and basic human rights they are granted. Social workers have a duty to empower members of vulnerable populations and bring awareness to communities of the oppression that may be happening. Since most vulnerable populations are unable to advocate for themselves, social workers are required to use their own professionalism to guide members to the rights that they deserve. It is also required of social workers to establish the essentials needed for their client’s surrounding community and decided where responsibility was needed to achieve those needs. Social workers are used as advocates allowing clients to realize their worth in their community and that they deserve fair human rights to advance in their life.…
In order to understand what ethics truly represent we must also look at the things that it is not. Ethics is not about our own personal feeling, it’s not about fitting in with societal norms it is not about imposing our own religious beliefs because we think they are correct, it is not choosing to help some and not all because of preconceived notions. What ethics is “The fundamental values of the human services profession include respecting the dignity and welfare of all people; promoting self-determination; honoring cultural diversity; advocating for social justice; and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity.” (http://www.nationalhumanservices.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=43)…
Social work professionals who work in this setting turn into monitors of public policies and social conditions. Therefore, they are fundamental in “refining the social work profession and society-at-large, regarding anticipated or unanticipated consequences that might result from public policies and practices in Canada” (Graham, Swift, & Delaney, 2003, as cited in Yee, 2016, October 20). In this context, the role of social workers is to advocate for social justice by using social policy to promote political solutions for social issues, which means that practitioners can “promote social equality and social justice not only in the service community but also in the population at large” (Graham, Swift, & Delaney, 2003, as cited in Yee, 2016, October…
The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics (NASW, 2008, Code of Ethics) outlines the importance of cultural competency and social diversity in NASW, 2008, § 1.05 and also discusses the importance in recognizing human rights and social justice in the NASW, 2008, § 6.04. As a whole I do…

Hello, Carmen! As Joan realizes that she is incompetent and unqualified to provide the services that Ms. Smith needs, she should take initiative to gain relevant experience to expand her therapeutic services promote social justice in her community. According to National Association of Social Workers ethical standard 1.04(a), social workers are only to provide services and represent themselves as competent only in the boundaries of education, training, license, certification, supervised experience, or other relevant professional experience (Reamer, 2006, pg. 256). I believe that Joan made the right professional decision to address Ms. Smith anxiety symptoms; however, diagnosing Ms. Smith with anxiety before an assessment was completed was unprofessional…
In the field of social work, we are faced with ethical dilemmas, more often than not. These dilemmas can come from conflicts with certain social work ethics and standards such as the right to self-determination, dual relationships, or confidentiality. A social worker can even face an ethical dilemma from a conflict of morals and values that they may have with their client. I will be examining an ethical dilemma that intersects both morals and values and confidentiality. Let’s say for example a social worker has an 18 year old client who is pregnant, still living with their parents and seeking an abortion.…
Imagine a life with no social workers. In this theory, would there be social justice? Social workers aim to assist people with the basic needs and values that are needed in life. This goal is fulfilled through the use of social work values. These values consist of “competence, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, service, and social justice” (NASW).…
As Social Workers we are supposed to meet clients where they are at in their life. One of the principles of service in National Association of social workers Code of Ethics (2008) is violated simply because they can't and wont help this person. The other principle is that of dignity and worth of the person. If these people valued the client and her wanting to get treatment, they would find a way to work around the other issues she is having.…

Ethics depict an important role in any profession as well as individual persons but the concept is deeply rooted in social work. The conceptualization of ethics in social work is to improve decision-making among practitioners. As an undergraduate social work student I was educated on the NASW Code of Ethics and as an intern in field I can analyze my own particular values as well as the agency’s Metropolitan Family Services (MFS).…
