Sociology is “the scientific study of society and human behavior” (Henslin, 6). In this E-Portfolio paper, I will analyze a College Student group using these two sociological perspectives, Functional Analyzes and Rational Choice. These will be used to analyze our role in society and interaction with others.

Being a college student can be challenging; when you are the new student leaving home for the first time. It can be over whelming because it is a completely new world. Your old friend from high are not there with you, so you are surrounded by complete strangers. Some of the things we might find easy to understand, like slang words, are difficult for students that don’t have English as there first language. They may have a very difficult time learning and or understanding. Languages are a big part of communicating with others and understanding a person’s culture through interaction, is vital in the classrooms. Colleges are very diverse so there are many opportunities to learn about someone else and their culture. Norms for college students I have found that, academics and other life events can really get college students down and make them feel very stressed and anxious. Most college students feel stressed out, sad, or overwhelmed frequently. I can relate to this because in my college experiences I find myself stressed and overwhelmed all the time. When these different departments and people carry out their own individual roles, and work together, they help students achieve their goals. A manifest function of college education, for example, includes gaining knowledge, preparing for a career, and finding a good job that utilizes that education. Latent functions of your college years include meeting new people, participating in extracurricular activities, or even finding a spouse or partner. “Social processes that have undesirable consequences for the operation of society are called dysfunctions” (Henslin 26). In education, examples of dysfunction include getting bad grades, truancy, dropping out, not graduating, and not finding suitable
