The advantage of the medical model is that diseases are readily diagnosed. But this approach is implies that people with disabilities are unhealthy and that health is only about physical disease and mortality.
The holistic approach broadened the medical perspective, and also introduced the idea of positive health. The holistic Model isformulated from the 1946 WHO definition of health which states; "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".
The social model became known from the social model of disability. It was developed as a reaction to the traditional medical model. This model examines factors which contribute to health such as social, cultural, political and the environment. An example is poor housing. The holistic and social models have the advantage of focusing on mental as well as physical health, and on broader issues of active participation in life. They also allow for people living active lifestyles in spite of a physical impairment: blind people may still be able to carry out their aspirations whilst being productive and content and so they are seen as healthy.
