Coming from the United States of America is a privilege that we all take for granted on a daily basis. The way that we interact with each other, travel anywhere that we want to go, and do what we want to do is remarkable, considering the fact that there are places on Earth that are not able to have as much freedom to do so. I am going to take you to South Africa to give you an idea of a place that, in some aspects of life are similar to living in America but in other aspects are completely different.

Giving gifts or presents is not something that is accepted or orthodox in the South African culture. In this culture it is ok to give a gift but it is preferred that this only happen on birthdays. When you are giving or presenting a present or a gift to another person it is expected that you will give the gift to the person who it is for with your right hand. Giving a gift with your left hand is not only considered bad luck but it is also considered to be rude and unacceptable. As for interpersonal relationships, everyone has a role to play. Although everyone has his or her own role to play everyone is taught that no matter what your religion, skin color, or ethnicity is, that everyone is equal. In this culture it is expected that you give your elders and your parents the most respect because they are the most wise in the culture. Not only that but in the South African culture is believed that “it takes a village to raise a child” as well as “keep the piece”. With these beliefs, not only will the new generation coming up be able to take care of the traditions, culture and be able to continue a legacy but it will also teach them how to not be evil or live with envy in their life. A marriage in African communities (including South Africa) was based on Polygamy and bridewealth. Polygamy is the custom of having more than one wife. Bridewealth is when the groom’s family gives the bride’s family livestock or some other form of wealth and in return the bride is to continue her productivity and bear children for her husband. Men typically go to work, and do what are considered “manly” duties around the home. (Women can have jobs but is not likely.) Although, relationships between husband and wife are not biased on love, it is more biased on a business, raising children is something that shows love and business.
