Reading Comprehension Questions Part 1: Spanish Encounters How does Columbus portray the people he encounters in this letter? When Columbus reaches the Island of Juana, he states “I could not have speech because they all fled immediately” (pg. 35). This quote illustrates how the natives were scared to meet the Americans; perhaps the natives did not want to be taken as property so they ran away. In addition, since there was no interaction (because the Natives were timid and scared) , it was easy for Columbus to take over their land.…
Once upon a time, in the year 2013, on the island of Oahu, there was a student who was going to start the beginning of 7th grade in Waipahu Intermediate School. Dr. Roberta Sant iago is the assistant principal in charge of the world languages department. This year, one teacher must teach a sixth class of Spanish. The collective bargaining agreement allows five classes per teacher, with a sixth class to incur extra compensation. One new untenured Spanish teacher would take the class if no one else volunteered to teach the sixth period. A tenured male Spanish teacher asked to teach the class, hoping to boost his final average salary before retirement.…
Steven M. Cahn in his article Guiding, Grading, and Guarding, is about several aspects in the life of a Teacher. How to make students comprehend the session’s teachers taught, the problem with the grading system, and the trouble a professor faces controlling a classroom they fear. This article could not be any more accurate about the problems we face in our school systems. Dr. Cahn describes how great teachers not only motivate their students, teach the material at hand, and organize a classroom, but also provide a vision of excellence. Describing how teachers have to enter a new classroom with a goal of the progression of its students in mind.…
Every day of junior year I woke up and dreaded the second I had to step into Mrs. Monroy’s Spanish class. She was the strict, no nonsense kind of teacher and she was cruel and cold-hearted when it came to grading. It only took half of a semester for my grade to start falling below a B. This caused for some “talks” with my parents and for growth, a term that that they heavily emphasized in those “talks”, to come to the forefront of my mind. When I think of growth, I do not just think of growing from eating too much ice cream, but also growing in ways like learning to play a new sport or, in this case, learning a new language. Trying to learn anything in Spanish seemed impossible, it has always been my worst subject and it also did not help that I had zero friends in the class and the best seat to take naps in.…
Throughout my life I have seen how people admire artists and singer because for whatever reason these individuals have built their careers for the need. Many singers and artists that appear on tv have started from the bottom, and their stories have impacted the lives of people. I have seen superheroes with superpowers that people have followed for years. But neither the singers, artists, or superheroes have had some influence on me. It took me two years to realize what a great impact one of my teachers from high school had on me , she is such as a fantastic teacher with many strengths, and knowledge.…

This week, I observed a first-grade classroom in which RTI is implemented. The observation was done in another first-grade classroom at the same school. At the period of observing the classroom, there were 18 students present. According to my host teacher, 20 students are enrolled in her class. There were 12 girls and 8 boys in the classroom.…
The teacher only took very little action and blew if off, since this the first time this has ever occurred in her class with Lucy. Spare time is given after the lecture is complete , so of course Lucy turns to that person’s direction and for the first time she actually wants to learn more about another person. Lucy could go on talking with that person, more than she already has, but class has come to end. The rest of the day was a blur to Lucy, her mind had been occupied by that person and as soon as she got home, she leaned back on her bed and sighed of exhaust. Soon after, she got back up and gathered her homework to work on.…
Observations were conducted in a Transitional Bilingual Education Kindergarten class at PS 120 and at a Dual Language First grade class at PS 163. Viewing a live classroom provided a novel learning experience from veteran teachers using various methods or strategies of teaching while observing the students’ responses, the classroom environment amalgamated with the interaction of students. On Friday 3/16/18, Ms. Hong’s Kindergarten class had 25 Chinese students concluding an 08:25 morning meeting, whence a language arts lesson commenced. A review of sentence writing began. Questions followed in rapid succession interspersed with instruction After the review, she asked students to work on their personal narrative stories.…
I noticed this two years ago when I moved here with my family. We can define and recognize people from other countries, but still we try to communicate in the best possible way and to learn the meaning of special words when we are talking to them. Inside the United States, we have lots of different communities, such as American, Black, Hispanic, and others. The interesting thing about this is that inside them we have lots of sub-communities which have their own dialects. For example, in American there are differences in speech in the different states, and even inside one state.…
I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…
However, the classroom atmosphere was very relaxing, calm, and controlled. You could tell that the teacher really had respect from her students, and they also had respect for her. Before she started her lesson, she told me that there were two learning disabled children in her class.…
Throughout the course of my five days at the SAHETI primary school, I found myself astonished at various activities that are done throughout the day. Through the course of my practical, I was given a Grade two class to observe and I unquestionably discovered a recently developed love for that age group. I was always adamant from the first time I knew I wanted to become a teacher that I wanted to teach Grade one’s, but my thoughts have definitely evolved. During the course of my observing I was more than willing to help with various activities such as marking, doing spelling tests with the children, as well as helping them with any difficulties they were having with their work. I have gained a lot of experience after helping out with the activities and my knowledge for teaching has grown immensely.…
