King Henry’s first wife was Catherine of Aragon, the daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon and widow of Henry’s brother; she was a very righteous and devout catholic, who was greatly loved by her people. Catherine and Henry were married in 1509, and the subsequent pregnancies followed suit; in a tragic turn of events, the queen gave birth two six children, only one of which survived, princess Mary. Henry VIII was not a very patient man or faithful man, he was known to have various affairs with other women; but Henry’s patience had run out, he was adamant about having a male heir. Now during the king’s reign before his divorce, he had taken a liking to Thomas, he even made Thomas his personal councilor; they would spend hours talking and and discussing a great many things, and sometimes having a merry time of it. Henry, in fact, liked Thomas’ council and company so much he would make Thomas spend weeks and sometimes months away from his family, sometimes to his great annoyance and exasperation; the king would seek his advice above all else, and hold it in high regard, above anyone else’s. Now around the death of Henry and Catherine’s sixth child, Henry began to lose interest in Catherine, and set his eyes on Anne Boleyn. So he asked the pope for an annulment of his marriage to Catherine on the basis that the marriage was illegitimate
