Stage lighting is defined as “the use of light to create a sense of visibility, naturalism, composition, and mood”(Mts, “Modern stage lighting”). Stage Lighting has been used in performances for hundreds of years. “Modern stage lighting began to flourish with the development of the incandescent lamp in the late 1800’s”(Mts, “Modern stage lighting”). Since that time, the lighting industry has seen many innovations such as LED lighting, DMX, and many other improvements. With countless inventions still to come, stage lighting is guaranteed to become an even bigger part of modern day performances. No matter how complex the lighting setup is, every show contains a few key principles. “The basic qualities of light are intensity, form, color, direction, and movement”(Mts, “Qualities of Light”). These are universal terms which apply to every lighting environment. The most commonly misunderstood term is movement. “Movement is a change in Intensity, color, or distribution”(Mts, “Qualities of light”). Whether it is a dark drama or a happy musical, the goal of the lighting designer should be to make the audience feel like they are actually in the production. “The stage lighting shapes our understanding of the performance”(Moran, 17). “For theater productions, the changes in lighting should be very slow so that the lights do not distract the audience from what is happening on stage. Contrary to that, a concert uses rapid changes in light to energize the crowd. While the intensity of the light focuses the audiences attention, the color influences the mood. The more vivid the color, the more pronounced the effect”(Roctronics, “Change rates”). All of these things have to be taken into consideration to produce a successful lighting
