Saturday night, at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Tom Jackson, a Lieutenant General of the South, got shot by one of his own men while they were planning a night attack. When the surgeon arrived he decided that Jackson had blood clots in his wound. The surgeon had to act fast or the Union would come and attack them. On the way to the field hospital, the doctors decided that they would have to amputate Jackson’s arm because of the cut artery by the bullet. After they amputated his arm they buried it in the ground near the battle. Meanwhile, the war continued, which led to many soldiers being killed or wounded.
The next day, Jackson woke up with the feeling of recovery. Jackson soon started to get his spirit back on winning the war. About four days later Jackson developed pneumonia. The doctors think the cause …show more content…
They called him Stonewall because he was standing like a stone wall to guard from a Union attack and ended up stopping the Union assault. On October 7,1861 Jackson was appointed major general and then in 1862 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and given command of the Valley District. Jackson was well respected and admired by people in the South. A poem written about Jackson was from one of his soldiers that soon became a very popular song called “Stonewall Jackson’s Way”. Many members of the Confederates miss Jackson’s discipline and tactical sense. General Lee of the South, was saddened to hear of Jackson’s passing. He would miss a friend and a trusted commander. The night Jackson lay dying, Lee sent a message to Jackson saying “Give General Jackson my affectionate regards, and say to him: he has lost his left arm but I my right.". When Lee found out about Jackson’s death he told his cook “"William, I have lost my right arm" and "I'm bleeding at the
