Pro-gun advocates would argue that having a gun would decrease the amount of violent crimes, and one may believe this is to be fact because, if the suspect knew the victim had a gun, then they would not commit the felony. Through stricter policies, there can be more thorough background checks so that criminals and mentally-ill people will not be able to obtain a gun. In the article, Gun Violence In America Fact Sheet, the author says, “Most criminal gun violence is committed by individuals who lack mental wellness” (“Gun Violence”). The majority of firearm crimes are committed by those who are mentally-ill. If the` gun laws were stricter, then it would be far more difficult for those who are mentally unstable to obtain a gun. Individuals who are mentally-ill can sometimes end up walking into schools and killing innocent children. Stricter laws will decrease the amount of school shootings because it will be harder for mentally-ill individuals to obtain a gun. “31 states do not ban convicted misdemeanor stalkers from owning guns and 41 states do not force convicted domestic abuses from relinquishing guns they already own” (“Should More Gun Laws”). The fact that so many states do not require convicted stalkers or abusers to give up their guns is.... Those individuals are able to keep guns in their possession, but stricter gun laws can and will force these convicted offenders to give up their guns.
