This organizer can be used during a reading and after a reading and students’ can add to the vocab organizer as they go along. The purpose of the organizer is to build the students’ knowledge on the specific term or terms in the content area that they are in. For instance, in Social Studies students’ may be studying the unit of Colonial America and there may be a pool of words that are similar or dissimilar. Students’ can be paired in different groups studying and filling out the organizer of the vocab word they are assigned to. In doing this they will also be able to keep the organizer as a note to always remember the terms in the unit they are studying. Vocabulary is vital in students’ learning words that they will never forget and use for future prior knowledge in a classroom. In social studies it is important for students’ to understand certain tier 3 words that shape each unit that is presented by the teacher. This graphic organizer strategy will be a successful tool in developing group collaboration, strong vocabulary, and note-taking skills for future reference. I am excited to utilize this strategies and insert them in my lesson plans as I teach middle school social studies. In integrating literacy in social studies I will need to coordinate with my ELL teacher and Language Arts teacher to differentiate the instruction to accommodate students’ who are struggling or advancing in the content area of social studies. The literacy strategies of Jigsaw and Word Meaning Graphic Organizer should help students’ to become the best in history content and get students’ in the habit of thinking more while they read. In, addition building a high vocabulary that will help the students’ succeed on summative assessments that will be indicator of improvement throughout the course of the year. I am privileged to be able to apply these strategies for growth in literacy for my students’ and I know that I will see much progress throughout the school year.
