The gap in the completion rate for minorities at community colleges can be attributed to the students’ background, academic disadvantages and student involvement (Carter, 2006). Research conducted by Bean and Eaton (2000), suggest that the combination of the students background and their interaction in the collegiate environment are both factors that contribute to retention. Students from backgrounds that include immigrants or English as a second language may face a difficult time adjusting to the higher education setting.

Research indicates the positive correlation amongst student involvement in extracurricular activities and student success (Astin, 1985; Tinto, 1993; Holloway, 2002; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005) research provides examples of the impact that participation in extracurricular actives can have a positive outcome for students.
