A soldier gazed at her and saw a girl of 13 maybe 14 years old. He watched over her carefully as she approached and there on her back seemed to a sack. “A sack is strapped to her back!” He shouted to alert his fellow soldiers. Another soldier called out to the girl, “STOP,” and as she approached, he demanded to know what was in the sack. However, she spoke no English, so his words made no sense to her.
In an overcoming fright he rushes at her, snatches the sack and in one sudden motion tosses it as far as he can. The young girl stumbled as she gathered herself off the ground and for a moment stood there gazing at the sack lost. And she began crying, over and over she cried the same words. In Pashto it translated to “kill me too.” The sack that lay upon her back was not carrying a bomb, it was carrying a baby.
After an investigation, it was determined to be a mistake, the soldier was returned his rifle and ordered to return to duty as well. Everyone in his platoon echoed the findings of the investigation and told him it was a mistake that could have happened to any of
