After his return from Agra, Shivaji founded the Maratha Empire in 1674 and crowned himself as Chhatrapati. Shivaji advocated Hindu self-rule and promoted Hindu traditions in his kingdom. He was bravely able to defend his small territory in the face of brutal attacks from much better equipped Mughal Empire. Shivaji died in 1680 and was succeeded by his son Sambhaji Bhosle. Sambhaji continued the fight against the neighbouring Muslim kingdoms before he was captured and killed by Mughals in 1689. The Mughal Empire reached its peak towards the end of the 17th century.
