Sumer began in 5000 and ended in 1750 when a neighboring city attacked. During this period, there was trade and a form of writing, one called Cuneiform script. Finally, in 2500 BCE a man by the name of Eannutum became king. He united the city states and made a small empire. This empire was made of much of Sumer and a little bit of Elam. Elam was one of the neighboring areas and their people were called the Elamites. Then, in 2234 BCE a man by the name of Sargon of Akkad started the Akkadian empire which ruled over Sumer and much of Mesopotamia. The Akkadian Empire was the first multi-national empire in the history of the world. In 2218 BCE, a group called the Gutians invaded from the north and took over. Sumerians hated the Gutians, claiming that they were a punishment sent by god. In 2047 BCE the Ur III period began. It lasted until the downfall of Sumer, in 1750 BCE. The Sumerians had so many major advances during this time, it was also known as the Sumerian Renaissance. They maintained peace during this whole period and had many cultural advancements such as art and technology. These flourished because the peace gave everyone more time to focus on other things.
