At this point in time, race is something that is unescapable. When a child is born race is one of the first things implicated onto them. The classification and separation of different people has been around since the early expeditions of the Indian Ocean region and has become more prevalent and advanced as time has gone on. In the book, Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting by Vijay Prashad he focuses specifically on “the peoples who claim the heritage of the continents of Asia and Africa” (Prashad, x). When he dissects the past struggles of these people and the evolution of white privilege throughout the book he discusses the antiracist framework of multiculturalism.…
The two movies I choose are Talladega Nights and Hardball. Hardball is an inspiring story in which a man who is on a bad path in lights loses all his money, and is forced to coach a baseball team of underprivileged kids and ends up caring for them. He leads the tea to a championship, and they lose a player to a gunshot, but they join together and win! Talladega Nights is the story of Ricky Bobby, a race car driver who was mistreated and abandoned by his father. He thought that he had to win to get love, then he lost everything, found love anyway, and won the biggest race.…
Li Ang’s “The lost Garden” and Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” are both stories with love as a central theme, both these works however touch on more than just that. Gender issues are addressed in both works; while they may differ in representation both show the inner workings of the male and female roles in Asian culture. With a strong patriarchal figure in Li Ang’s novel, compared to the strong female charters in Ang Lee’s film. The use of class systems is also represented in both works. An example being the contrast of the newly rich construction developers, versus the prestigious families that date back centuries.…
The Last Dragon is a movie that follows a martial artist named Leroy Green. He is on a jorney to reach the final level of martial arts. The post-1990s saw the rise of the Sixth Generation filmmakers, many of whom worked outside the state studio system, yet brought “Chinese cinema” to world’s attention. Jia Zhangke’s cinema verité (truthful cinema) film Still Life highlights the negative features of China’s entry into modern capitalism. Heavily focusing on ordinary people, Jia’s cinematic career is best seen as characteristic of postsocialist societies both East and West. This particular film attempts to capture the lost past through the future; repeatedly stressing that despondently holding onto the past will most often lead to being swept away by the rapidity of time.…
"The King of Kong" is a story of obsession and subculture. Billy Mitchell, the film's villain, reigns supreme of the world of retro competitive video-gaming. His opponent: Steve Wiebe, a mild-mannered middle school teacher who lacks the confidence to fully assert himself. Despite this, Steve has world-class talent on the game Donkey Kong. When he beats Billy's record at his home machine, Billy works to have Steve's score invalidated on a technicality.…
The Icon and the Militant Since ever, humans differ in their skills, abilities, and talents. These characteristics are what make differences between individuals but also lead to integration between their ideas, creations, and decisions. While some individuals have a talent in sciences and arts, others are talented in sport and business. These are just some examples that show the diversity between humans in life. This diversity of talents does not make just integration between individuals but also creates a competition.…
I chose the film Gettysburg because it provides a great overview of the battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg is a 1993 American war film. The film tells the story of the battle between the Union and confederate armies during the Civil War. The movie made sure to capture each day of the battle, which lasted three days. I was kind of confused at first because the film had no clear protagonist and antagonist.…
As a little child, my nephew always watched a power ranger’s video every day. He also wants to become a superhero like in the movie because he thought the superhero was cool and had some kinds of power than normal people. In the movie, there were showing good people were protect others and bad people tried to control the world, which make the children learn that not everyone were good people. Hero possesses to protect their loved one from dangerous without fear of losing their life.…
The Odyssey. I’ve already heard this title when I was in high school but I don’t know what the story is all about. This movie is easy to understand. I could say that it is “All in one”.…
When you are reading two stories, do you ever notice the similarities and differences? Well, “The Smallest Dragonboy” and How to Train Your Dragon are two exciting tales of two young boys: K’van and Hiccup. They both involve dragons that help them positively impact their homeland, yet their relationships between humans and dragons are opposite. The protagonists in the stories both change their community significantly.…
Wong Kar-Wai experiments with plot, characters, objects, light and equipment to tell a story while making a political statement about Hong Kong. In this film, the viewer experiences that even a simple film with a small budget and shot in a small amount of time can greatly change what…
Compare the ways in which The sword in the stone and The legend of king Arthur have explored different perspectives of the same story line in their movie. Introductions: As many movies get older and outdated movie's producers make new and improved versions of a pervious movie. Made back in 1963 The sword in the stone was created by Disney.…
The Goddess (1934) is a silent film made by Wu Yonggang, a well-known Chinese director in the 1930s. Hailed as “a masterpiece of ‘the first golden age of Chinese cinema’”, the film marked not only Wu’s directorial debut, but also “the pinnacle of [Ruan Lingyu’s] career” (Harris, 128). Ruan’s “mature, nuanced performance”, which was “subtle but at the same time powerful and rich”, proved to be a major factor in the movie’s success and lasting impact in Chinese cinema – even inspiring Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan to produce Centre Stage (1992), a biopic of Ruan, over fifty years later (Harris, 128; Rayns, 18). This response will examine and show how the depiction of Ruan Lingyu by male directors in both The Goddess and Centre Stage make use…
Mulan For this essay, I have chosen the Disney movie, Mulan. This Disney movie tells a story about a young woman who is having a hard time finding her place in her Chinese culture in that she does not fit into the traditional society at the time. She wants to be able to honor her family in doing the right things but cannot seem to. When a war starts between the Huns and the Chinese, Mulan takes the place of her father who is too old to fight in the war.…
