The book begins with Dr. Paul Farmer talking about his arrival in Haiti. He was in Haiti three days after the earthquake. In Haiti, they do not know how to adequately prepare for the damaging events of earthquakes and other natural disasters. The one seismologist knew that the event was inevitable, but did not do anything. The public was not notified and was not as updated as people in the United States are. The government did not take the earthquake as seriously as they could have. They lacked money and other resources and most Haitians were not able to evacuate. Many people in Haiti felt that the government did not respond, only international groups responded.
The book was released in 2011. At the time of the book, there was almost no recovery. Now, there are some places that are nearing recovery, but there was a lot of damage from the earthquake and other weather events such as, Hurricane Matthew, which cost Haiti almost $1.9 billion
