Riding down Main Street, Justin thought about Ernest and decided to check on him. Turning left on Downing Avenue he went down the gravel road leading to the dilapidated house, knowing what everybody said about Ernest wasn’t true. Leaning his bike against the fence, Justin went up on the porch, and the door opened.
“Son, I am so glad to see you,” Ernest said excitedly. “Please come in.”
“I wanted to check on you,” sitting down on the steps, Justin said, “I’m sorry, but my parents don’t like you and especially my mom.”

Standing on the porch, Justin could see the inside the house, but when he recalled the stories he heard about prisoners in the basement and something to do with the Haunted mountain. Not wanting to take any chances, He started down the steps. Glancing at the old man’s sad face, Justin knew he would be safe and quickly changed his mind about going into the house. Closing his eyes, he stepped inside the door, and his heart was beating so fast he was sure it would burst through his chest. As the sweat poured down his back as he slowly opened one eye. Wanting to laugh, but he didn’t.
Upon entering the house, Justin looked around the small dark living room, noticing the ragged and worn drapes covering part of the large window. An old blanket hung over the rest of the window preventing the outside light from entering except through a rip on one end. Watching Ernest turn on a dim light amazed him.
Noticing an old table covered with a yellowed, vinyl tablecloth, along with two chairs placed by the window and chair parts lying in the corner waiting for repair.
