Esperanza demands, “…Rachel and Lucy who have the same fat popsicle lips like everybody else in their family.” This expression has an effect on what we know about Esperanza. She hopes that her and Nenny had similar features so people would know that they were sisters, comparable to Rachel and Lucy’s “popsicle lips”. I assume that Cisneros opens this chapter with a accurate listing of the contents of the junk store for two probable motives. First that knowing the junk store might be essential later in this story. Second because it’s essential to know that Esperanza’s family did not go to a lavish store to shop, they went to a junk store. Based on the confessions of the girls on Mango Street, Marin seems to be the only one who would smoke. Agreeing to Esperanza, “Those who don’t know any better come into our neighborhood scared.” She finds this incongruous since they go into a neighborhood of color, they get petrified. Esperanza affirms that they drive through straight without turning their heads to see what kind danger is their. At the start, Esperanza found it alluring that Rosa Vargas had so many kids. The kids, nonetheless, were barbarous. They were up for everything even if they could get hurt or not. Esperanza said that everyone would anguish about them and try to prompt them to stay out of trouble, but soon or later people stopped wasting their time and energy. The Vargas kids were derring-do and nothing was going to change
