Prosodies#1:
Prosodies #1 is a large three-dimensional sculpture created by Dianna Frid in 2013. It’s one of three figures that form part of a bigger gallery. Made of embroidery loops, plaster, paint, cloth, paper, powder pigments, metal, and cellophane, the figure is placed on a white background with only its “shadow” separating it from its surroundings. Prosodies #1 uses the repetitive shape and pattern of circles to build the sculpture from the base. Some unique features of this sculpture are the contrast between the colors, materials of the sculpture, and its “shadow”. The different colors of the shadow not only isolates the figure from its surroundings but also adds texture and color to it as well.
These physical features are what draws the viewer to the figure. As the viewer approaches, there’s a feeling of uncertainty that comes from the sculpture, as it appears to nearly fall. At nearly 6 feet, the sculpture seems to be defying gravity. This feeling of uncertainty results in curiosity and engages the viewer in investigating how the figure stands on its own. Like many of Ayón works, this picture explores the history and mythology of the Abakuá, a secret society found in Cuban. This particular image narrates a dinner service between ten different figures. Calligraphy is chosen as the artistic technique in order to highlight and intensify the expressive character of the materials. Therefore, with unusual materials such as sandpaper, chalk, varnish, acrylic, and different types of paper, the print forms different textures and tones throughout the image. This helps the viewer differentiate the figures from the background and also presents the print with a disturbing atmosphere.
