The academic standards are specific to each area of study and for each grade. The system has prescribed core standard s for English and arts, mathematics and core standards for reading and writing in other units. For mathematics the core standards are meant to lay a foundation for a student in whole numbers, decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions which are crucial for the student in learning and applying more difficult mathematical concepts and procedures. The student is expected to practice the application of mathematical procedures and way of thinking to real issues and to be prepared to reason mathematically. There are four types of assessment in Pennsylvania. Summative assessment is done at the end of as specific period to judge on the overall progress in educating the students. Formative assessment is conducted during the instruction time to facilitate the adjustment of the ongoing teaching progress.
