1st Paragraph:
One of the most important criteria that a horror story must have is suspense. In “The Monkey’s Paw” there are many times when the reader is compelled into the story. One of the first examples of suspense is in the beginning of the story. Sergeant-Major Morris enters and begins to discuss the monkey’s paw. The Sergeant says “I did have some idea of selling it, but I don't think I will. It has caused me enough mischief already.” Because of this description, the reader starts to wonder about the dangers of the paw. …show more content…
“The Monkey’s Paw” is based entirely on a supernatural object. This magical object is the monkey’s paw. The first sign that the monkey’s paw is magical is when Morris says “Well it’s just a bit of what you call magic.” During this discussion Morris is recalling several people that have also put wishes on this paw. As the reader, you know that a monkey's paw could never be magical. Later in the story, Mr.White wishes for two hundred pounds. The monkey's paw fulfills this wish but in a harmful way. Herbert is killed and because if his death, a company would like to send two hundred pounds to help comfort the White family.
