Diabetes is the failure of the pancreas hormone insulin to manage blood glucose adequately. In the article “Diabetes: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments.” Markus McGill states that “Insulin is a hormone that is produced in the pancreas” (MacGill.1). , which helps regulate the release of glucose in the blood and muscles. Insulin is essential in converting food to energy. Diabetes a disorder that affects how the body produce’s insulin either insufficient insulin, or no insulin. In the medical article “What Is Diabetes”, Dr. Ananya Mandal states that, “Type 1 diabetes is called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (Mandal 1). Mandal also indicates that,” In these patients there is complete lack of the hormone insulin that mandates external administration of the hormone regularly as treatment” (Mandal. 1). Type 1 diabetes is commonly seen in younger patients, and is not very common. Type 1 has no environmental stimulants the immune system attacks cells in the pancreas which cause the decrease of insulin production. In contrast, type 2 diabetes is insufficient insulin. Dr. Ananya Mandal describes that, “In type 2 diabetes, not enough insulin is produced or the insulin is insufficient to meet the needs of the body” (Mandal). Mandal also states that, “Obesity or being overweight predisposes to type 2 diabetes” (Mandal. 1). Type 2 has environmental stimulants a person can obtain it through a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, and stress. The oral cavity suffers because with diabetes healing is slower and sugar glucose can dysfunction normal oral systems & flora. In the journal, “Diabetes mellitus and its relevance to the practice of dentistry." Mark H Wilson states oral manifestations that occur in the presence of diabetes, “Gingivitis, periodontitis, dental caries, salivary gland dysfunction, oral infections, and Oro-facial sensory disturbances” (Wilson.4). Gingivitis is when there is inflammation and bleeding of the gingiva. Periodontitis is more advanced inflammation of gingiva. Periodontitis is seen more that gingivitis in diabetic patients. In the journal. "Oral manifestations and complications of diabetes mellitus: a review." Maskari Al et al state, “Periodontal disease has been reported with increased prevalence and severity in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes” (Maskari et all. 2). This is due to the healing process of diabetic patients which is worse than normal patients. The salivary glands also suffer complications. Salivary glands are essential for oral health saliva helps with speech, eating, and remineralizing. Maskari et all also state that, “It has been showed that poorly controlled type 2 diabetics have a lower stimulated parotid gland flow” (Maskari et all. 3). This can lead to dry mouth that can cause irritation in the oral cavity. Dry mouth on the oral cavity is called xerostomia. Mark H Wilson
