A tetanus bacterium enters the body through a puncture wound, which can be caused, by nails, insect bites, burns, splinters or injection drug sites. These things happens all over the world but is more common in 3rd world country’s.. Tetanus is less common in 1st world countries than 3rd or 2nd world countries. This is because there is a lot of rubbish on the ground and metal in 3rd world countries. A combination vaccine called, tdap protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. All adults should have this reapplied every 10 years. Adults who were never properly vaccinated should be give 3 doses in 12 months. Almost all cases of tetanus happen to people who either have never been vaccinated or have not had a booster vaccination in the last 10 years. People who get tetanus and recover should be vaccinated as well, even though you have had the disease it does not mean you immune because the body does not produce memory cells for this disease to fight it of. If it were strictly a human pathogen that didn't live anywhere else but the human body, there would be more of chance to eradicate it with a vaccine like the human race did with small pox (though small pox is a virus, not a
