In the “Little Rock Girl 1957” it says on page 15 “Equal means getting the same thing, at the same time, and in the same place.” What does this quote mean to you? In the 1950’s the Civil Rights movement was at it’s worst. In the early 1950’s the Brown v Board of Education court case threatened to segregate schools so whites and blacks would be separated. The media illuminated events by broadcasting the news with TV, radio, photos, and newspaper to attract a national audience.…
But, even though suburbs were meant for everyone they weren’t, they were very segregated some even had signs in front of them saying that blacks were not allowed, and women were stuck taking care of the kids all day at home. Economy post war era, 1945-1960, was great. However this era had a bad reputation for women and minority groups. There was a lot of economic growth in this era.…
Segregation was very adamant in the 1950’s after the 13th amendment was passes making slavery against the law. Cacuscain’s would not stand the fact that they were now equal to an African American by law so they separated (segregated) in every way possible, including schools. Linda Brown attended a ball-black elementary school 21 blocks away from her home and she lived very close to an all-white school. Her father applied to the school and her application was declined due to the color of her skin. A court case was filed overturning Plessy separate but equal doctrine.…
In part, Americans in the 1950s were prosperous and conforming to the life that lay ahead of them. An example of this conformity and consensus was the migration to the suburbs in the early 50s, known as the "White Flight" (Document A). Millions of white people flocked…
Prosperity of the 1950 's The 1950 's was a very flourishing decade and the economy was prospering because Americans were spending more on items that were once scarce during the war. The growing rate of the nations supplies and services actually doubled and rose from approximately $300 billion in 1950 to $500 billion in 1960.The increase in spending, fueled by the cold war and military spending during the Korean conflict, was an very important boost to the economy. The fundamentals of the prosperous 1950 's were new cars, suburban lifestyle, advances in technology and medicine, and pop culture. Since Americans were receiving a larger income it lead to more spending on extra items. Americans were buying cars because they were converting to…
Many of people would love to live in a different time than their own. However, the position that varies on the topic is when. It all depends on one’s personal values and hobbies. A good decade to live in would be the 1950’s. This is due to the music, propaganda posters, and automobiles.…

Televisions affected our grandparents’ time in the 1950s As the world is getting more developed day by day, we can not imagine how different our lives would be without Iphones or Netflix. There are many decades that I have thought about being a fly on the way, the 1950’s is one of that eras. I might have even dreamed of being a part of the “Happy Days” of our nation’s history. Some of the highlights of the “happy days” were more babies were being born, the economy grew including the creations of the “middle class” and there were strides made in the fight for equality. However, with progress there is always setbacks. Some of the not so happy parts of the “1950’s happy day” era included the atomic bomb being tests on American soil, environmental degradation, and the fact that discrimination was still in America (728, 753-54).…
Segregation plays an enormous role in the history of America. During the nineteen fifties white American children had access to neighborhood schools, whereas black children had to travel several miles outside of their neighborhoods to go to school. In some instances, black children were ten minutes away from a nearby all white school, but had to travel an hour by car to go to an all-black school. This was happening before Brown v. Education was taken into effect, now known as a landmark in the education history of the United States. Until then, equal education for African American communities was in dire need of improvement compared to the education that white American children were receiving.…
Many people would say that African Americans have majorly progressed since the Brown v Board of Education decision in 1954. The decision is acknowledged as one of the greatest decisions the Supreme Court has made in the 20th century. The decision ended legal segregation in public schools. Although legally segregation ended in 1954, does it still remain in the 21st century? More than 50 years later, we do see substantial improvements among African Americans in regards to segregation in schools.…
Some may feel in order to understand teenage life in the 60s you have to be there to experience there life. I personal think this is true, you could have some type of understanding from history but you will never fully understand the life they lived unless you were there to live it. When people think of the sixties, they automatically think of things like Woodstock, drugs, and unhygienic long-haired teenagers. In 1960s John Kennedy was a young president that symbolized a spirit of hope for the nation especially true for the teenagers. When Kennedy was murder many felt that their hopes died to.…
Education in the United States went through great reform in the late 1800s to 1900s. Change didn’t come about easy and educational equality is still a popular debate today. Although educational change was talked about and seemingly in progress, equality still had a long way to go. Differences in racial and social classes became prevalent especially through schooling. Black Americans were limited and restrained with obstacles such as what schools they were allowed to attend, what classes they were to take, and by what the teachers were taught to educate on.…
