During this course I gained knowledge regarding directorial techniques during collaborations, discussions, and readings. The knowledge and techniques gained from this assignment are practical and applicable to directing. I chose this specific project as my strongest work because of the content. I had no prior knowledge of Sarah Kane or In-Yer-Face theatre. The research for the project taught me how to track words and images within a text to determine themes. These tools also allowed me to develop my vision statement “The desire to escape our pain is greater than our fear of DEATH” and concept statement “An assault on the senses with a multi-Media …show more content…
During this course I discovered an enormous amount of dramatic literature. I gained a global knowledge and historical perspective through this course and the readings. Again, content knowledge was acquired through group discussion, collaboration, feedback, as well as the readings. Reading and researching Shakuntala, provided an opportunity to discover intersectionality in Hindu, Sanskrit writings. Shakuntala is a woman, a Hindu, an orphan, and overcomes all of the oppression of her culture through her defiance of social norms and pursuance of love. Shakuntala is both goddess and feminist. Shakuntala defies Aristotelian structure, and yet is a feminist heroine in Hindu culture. These were all areas in which I lacked knowledge. This is my strongest work because I grew from no prior knowledge to proficient in this epic story, play, and character of Hindu culture. I also learned to accept the idea of feminism across cultures. In defending my Oral Comprehensive exam, I was forced to acknowledge my ideas and views on feminism had been dramatically altered in part from course work, but in particularly through this …show more content…
I feel confident in developing concepts and creating renderings for set, props, and costumes. It is a strength that I will continue to foster.
Challenges
Ironically, my strengths were rooted in challenges. The challenge of Crave came from my own insecurities and fears of inadequacies, and being outside my comfort zone with the lack of plot and character development with Crave.
I was equally challenged in Dramatic Theory with my lack of prior knowledge of plays and timelines of theatre movements. Again, feeling inadequate as a non-theatre undergraduate student, this course became a challenge with defending ideas and observations within discussion boards and presentations.
I was academically and personally challenged to see myself as a theatre practitioner and as a designer. My world had never included the design process or creating a vision through this process. I began the program without training or knowledge regarding design. Costuming, set design, properties, lighting, and sound design were areas of weakness and frustration for me prior to Theatrical Design.
Looking forward to the
