During the 1960’s, civil rights were still a big concern, especially in the south. One town that felt the effects of racial tension was Selma Alabama. Even though segregation was recinded , the African Americans were being denied the right to vote, a right all U.S. citizens have. Just the fact that Selma officials were making it hard for African Americans to vote goes against the basic values of the United States. The African American citizens were upset, not only because they could not vote, but the fact that their rights were being challenged. In response to this, they conducted peaceful protests. This is one of the finer examples of the right time to protest. If this protest were not held, it could have led to African Americans never being able to vote or worse, a setback among jepordizing their basic freedoms.
