Competency 6 For someone who has worked in the school system for 5 years, I have worked with many students that have been diagnosed with Autism and/or Asperger’s Disorders. By the time they enter the school setting they have often already been diagnosed. I was always curious how children could be diagnosed with Autism at such a young age, and I learned a lot of new information on how it is diagnosed. I have had the opportunity to observe students in higher grades who have autism and utilize some forms of AT. I was able to relate to the section on Assistive Technology Devices and Students with Autism on page 163. One students was a boy who is in the 4th grade who uses a word processing device for typing in his notes and assignments because he has difficulty with writing and his handwriting and spelling are hard to read. He is so proud of this device and enjoys using it and showing other people how it works. He also showed me how he keeps track of his assignments and this is in his assignment book.…
Tyrone has been referred to CDT by Dr Sarka Davidkova to be placed on the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) pathway. The referral provided background information highlighting speech delay, behavioural issues, stereotyping behaviours and lack of imaginative play. Sheree Briggs, Psychologist completed an autism assessment (18.12.14). Kathleen Kokiri, Tyrone’s grand mother consented for a developmental assessment to be completed at the Central ABC Kindergarten. Tyrone regularly attends Kindergarten 5 days a week.…

If a child has repetitive and restricted patterns of behavior, activities and interests, impairments in communication or social interaction, it could be a sign that they are experiencing this developmental delay. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition where remarkable gender differences have been observed in the recent past. With that said, there has been few longitudinal studies that investigate gender/sex differences in individuals with ASD, and there is still much to learn about how and why ASD affects it affects the genders differently (May, 20__, p.1078). Perhaps the most important issue that arises when ASD is investigated through a gendered lens is that of the vast disparity in the diagnosis of ASD between boys and girls. As Harrop et al. (2014, p.766) note, there is a 4 to 1 average “male dominance” in the diagnoses of ASD in children, Harrop further notes that this ratio can rise to as high 8 to 1 when particular types of autism are being diagnosed.…
It’s interesting to note that diagnosis of autism is very different among states, which might explain why diagnoses vary greatly amongst states. Data reported in 2012 shows that Iowa reported the lowest prevalence at 0.1% while Minnesota reported the highest rate at 1.2%. The IDEA evaluation features are also different from the state education agency criteria. While doing my observation visit I was able to observe a student with autism. I became so frustrated that watching him struggle made me asked the teacher if I could sit down with him to help him. To begin with, I did my observation hours in a foreign language class and I’m sure that class wasn’t suited for him. I felt terribly for the student because the teacher couldn’t dedicate the time to him the amount of time that he obviously needed. Her way of trying to help him learn the material at first was to group him with others class member.…
I believe that children with autism, learning to interact with first responders is critical. On the other hand, it is just as essential for first responders to understand autism and be prepared to respond effectively and safety to situations that arise involving children on the autism spectrum. For example, that incidence that occurred last week at a school in Florida, when a 10-year-old with autism was arrested last week and handcuffed. He clearly didn’t know what was happening and many on the autism spectrum do not like being touch. I know the child was being disruptive in class and threaten the paraprofessional in a previous incident, but law enforcement could have handle the matter differently and get the same result at the end.…
Kanner set the standard characteristics for an individual with autism as being socially aloof, having impaired social interactions, disturbances in language development, and rigidity and problems with change (Phetrasuwan, 2009). In order to be placed in one of the five categories an individual must first express these general symptoms. For instance, an individual diagnosed with Autistic Disorder will display three areas of developmental problems: impaired social interactions, “severe delays or lack of communication skills, impaired ability to initiate or sustain conversations, repetitive use of language, and lack of appropriate social imitative play”, and repetitive patterns of behavior, preoccupation and intense focus in areas of interest, and inflexible adherence to routines (Phetrasuwan, 2009).
