This is the day that the Allied Powers crossed the English channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. With German forces already in control of most of mainland Europe, the Allies knew that a successful invasion of the continent was detrimental to winning the war. The Allies created balloon army vehicles consisting of tanks and jeeps advancing toward the German lines. They would move the balloons at night and leave fake tank trails so that it all looked legitimate from the skies so that when German spy planes took planes overhead, the Germans would see where the Allies were “attacking” from.. This was all done in an effort to make the Germans think that the Allies were attacking on a different front than they actually were so Hitler would fortify that area and leave others weak. On June 5th, 1944, U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered for 6,000 landing craft, other ships and vessels carrying 176,000 troops to leave England for the trip to France. This was all a part of taking 5 main beaches codenamed Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and Omaha. All of them were easy victories except for Omaha. At Omaha, over 2,000 American troops died in less than two hours. But, after these losses, the Allies had taken control over Normandy. This was a very important turning point in the war because before this, the war was pretty much a one on one battle between Germany and the U.S.S.R., with the Soviets having not much help. But, after this, the Germans were forced to fight a two front war which caused a pretty swift victory for the Allies in
