The brain structure affected by PTSD shows some fascinating information. The hippocampus, which plays a role in short-term memory and helps process fear, was found to decrease in volume (Buggey, 2007). The amygdala is what links memory to emotion, was found to increase in volume (Buggey, 2007). This goes to show that after someone has been affected by some sort of trauma; it is hard to remember the entire experience, but you now have more knowledge about how you were feeling at the time and how you continue to feel. They are there to talk with people, gain information and help them to move past the problem. “If your client does have PTSD, you need not only to ask about the traumas experienced and the existence of the various PTSD symptoms, but also to obtain as much detail as you can about the frequency, intensity, and history of these symptoms.” Matsakis (1994, p.72). A trained professional wants to help people; they need to know exactly what went on in the situation so that the outcome can be favorable. People living with post-traumatic stress disorder can have a regular sleep at night, stop having suicidal or homicidal thoughts and they definitely can have a long and happy life. In conclusion, this research has gone over some reasons why people would get PTSD, what PTSD has done to their bodies and mind, and also how to overcome post-traumatic stress disorder. It describes part of the process that people have to go through after a traumatizing incident. No matter the type of person someone is, the way they dress or the way they act, it is possible for anyone to become diagnosed with post-traumatic stress
