Even though countries have the ability to invest and free trade with other there is a lack of trade policies that have caused harm to the environment and citizens. Those clothing industries that outsource their firm to another country in order to keep cost low have caused an increase of sweatshops in poor countries. Oatley uses the definition of a sweatshop as an “extreme exploitation, including the absence of a living wage of benefits, poor working conditions and arbitrary discipline” (352). These individuals that work here are not just underpaid and work long hours, but they sometimes suffer from the environmental problems that these factories have created. There is a lack of protection for the citizens when it comes to trading. If the cost of production ends up increasing then these firms will leave. This unjust for citizens to slave in unsafe conditions in order to help society economy grow. Even though Oatley mentions how things will change, I disagree because if we have known these problems for many years and have yet to take a major step in changing it then It’s one of the things that will never change. For instance, Nike is a major corporation that outsources their factories to less develop countries to employ workers at a low-wages in order to save the cost of production. In recent years, Nike has come under fire because of the environmental issues associated with their factories and the fact that they treat their workers like slaves and have children workers. The crimes that Nike commit in those nations would not be tolerated in the U.S. However, as individuals who overlook these problems because of the brand and it causes citizens in the U.S to not have to pay that must for their
