The Marriage and Family course has been an interesting course. I have learned some things that I did not have a great deal of knowledge about before. On the surface, the title of the class makes it appear that it will be simple and not very challenging. That notion couldn’t be further from the truth. This semester I have learned that relationships between spouses and their children can be very complex. It has caused me to think carefully about my future plans for a family as well as various aspects of marriage and family as they relate to society as a whole. The four highlights I will cover are The Dark Matter of Love, Jazz, ethnicity and race, and social class.
First I will discuss the assignment I completed on the documentary named The Dark Matter of Love. I found this film to be very insightful and thought provoking. It was really quite different than what I expected it would be when I began the assignment. One reason I chose this film was because my Aunt is from Russia. They relate to marriage and family because they are an important part of it. These two traits of people are things that make them unique. As this class has taught, this uniqueness doesn’t equate to superiority. All ethnicities and races are special and valuable due to the fact that they are members of the human family. Many of the greatest tragedies in history are the times when one ethnicity or race has attempted to oppress others based solely on those traits. One day perhaps those occurrences will happen less often or not at all. Sadly that day hasn’t happened yet. By valuing others for their humanity and uniqueness we can all play a part in making the world a better place instead of one of hostility and violence. I will now move to my final topic which is about social
