This is a sharp contrast of Fugui earlier in the story and it explains how much Fugui has come to respect and love Jiazhen. Their relationship is much more fruitful and peaceful than it was before. Later on in the story, Jiazhen fell when she and Fugui were watching over the iron cauldron. Fugui then sprinted over to make sure she was alright. Fugui thinks, “Seeing that Jiazhen wasn't hurt, my anxious heart relaxed a bit”(115). Through the words “anxious heart” Hua establishes a concerned tone that’s easy to comprehend. When a person suffers from anxiety or feels anxious, it is possible to feel a tightening in the chest, a rapid heart rate, racing thoughts, or feeling panicked. By understanding these possible symptoms of anxiety, one can easily comprehend how Fugui is feeling. Fugui obviously felt very worried about his wife. He could've been thinking that the worst had happened or he could be feeling panicked. The feeling of anxiety illustrates that Fugui has a strong relationship with his wife. First, Fugui reflects on time he spent with his mother. Fugui explains, “My mother really loved me, so she would work with me in the fields”(48). Hua creates a calming tone through the words “My mother”. A mother often loves her child unconditionally and never turns her back on them. Fugui's mom does her best to keep a loving and respectful relationship with her son even when he makes poor choices. Through the words “work with me” Hua creates a loving tone as Fugui's mother is taking time to help her son support their family. His mother spends time with him as they work and that time is important to her and Fugui. She can spend her time with her family and help support them at the same time. Next, while contemplating accepting money from his wife, Fugui states, “Mother’s health made me worry more”(57). Hua develops an anxious tone through the words “worry more” and illustrates the desperate situation Fugui is in. By taking money from his wife and getting a doctor, he could prolong his mother’s life. He could then continue to strengthen his relationship with his mom. Finally, Fugui states, “When she died she didn't even know where I was”(82). Through the words “didn't even know” Hua creates a dismal tone and illustrates that Fugui never got to say goodbye to his mother before she died. Fugui comes back and his mother is gone.
