There are four stages to Neuroblastoma, with one being the best and four being the absolute worse. Stage one is when it is in one area and can easily be removed by surgery. Stage two is when it is still in one area, but it cannot be easily or fully removed by surgery. Stage three is when the tumor has started spreading out through the body and can no longer be removed surgically. Lastly, stage four is broken into two parts, four and four S. Stage four is when the tumor has already spread all the way to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body. Finally, “[s]tage 4S (or IVS, or "special") neuroblastoma has spread only to liver, skin, and/or, to a very limited extent, bone marrow” (Encyclodedia 3). In 4S, the cancer has spread out, the child is normally within one year old, and the cancerous cells can be found near the lymph nodes by the tumor. The staging of Neuroblastoma depends on where the tumors are located and how they can be removed.
Neuroblastoma is a very common and serious disease, especially in children. It is the third most common cancer in young children. The younger the patient is, the higher chance of survival they have.
