The first major cause was The Enlightenment and its ideas spreading. In the 1700s, in Europe, new scholars questioned the religious teachings of the church. The scholars concluded that human reason could be used to achieve knowledge, freedom, happiness, and this would also improve society. The Enlightenment was also known as the Age of Reasons.
